Salary: £506 a day (umbrella)


As the Head of Highways and Transport, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of this borough. You will lead the maintenance of the highways infrastructure, develop sustainable transport solutions that are accessible to all, and contribute significantly to the carbon net zero targets.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Set the strategic agenda with clear priorities and infrastructure plans to meet the commitments.
  • Manage the delivery of efficient and effective highways and traffic management services.
  • Keep the service up to date and lead all service developments.
  • Deputise for the Divisional Director – Public Realm in your areas of responsibility.
  • Collaborate with key partners within and outside the borough to ensure the best outcomes for residents, businesses, and visitors.
  • Lead and strategically manage the division in conjunction with other members of the Divisional Management Team.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Detailed and practical understanding of policy, legislation, and practice relating to highways and traffic management.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of effective management techniques, including managing large budgets.
  • Knowledge of relevant Government policies relating to operational services.
  • Strong understanding of the structure and workings of local government and other agencies involved in highways and traffic management services.
  • Extensive experience in heading up Highways and Transportation within a Local Authority setting.
  • Proven experience of working in pressurised and political environments at a strategic level.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and diplomacy skills.
