Join the school’s dynamic team in Maidenhead, where you'll play a vital role as a SEN Teaching Assistant. This position is ideal for candidates who are aspiring art therapists, for example, looking to gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment.

The specialist school in Maidenhead caters to boys and girls aged 7–18 with a diverse range of autism and additional needs. The school has several different classes and contexts, making it a wonderful place to start your journey toward becoming an art therapist. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing support and supervision to students before, during, and after lessons
  • Assisting students in understanding and participating in set tasks
  • Supporting literacy and numeracy development, including note-taking
  • Working with individuals, small groups, or whole classes as needed
  • Encouraging the development of social skills and confidence
  • Maintaining accurate student records and participating in team meetings and training programs
  • Collaborating with colleagues to foster a positive organizational culture and adhere to safeguarding regulations

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree, preferably in Art or a related field (drama, Play, Music, Speech and Language, the Humanities, psychology, for example).
  • Your sincerity is what counts most, building the foundations of the voluntary, paid and life experiences you have had to this point
  • Previous SEN experience is advantageous but not essential; it is open to graduates and non-graduates; there are different paths to follow within the school
  • Solid educational background in English and Maths
  • Genuine interest in understanding the impact of mental health and Autism, particularly gender differences and how autism and neurodivergence present differently across various contexts, depending on the nature of the children’s autism
  • Outside interests or hobbies that promote diverse skill development (e.g., sports, cooking, coding, Performance arts—whatever you’re interested in)
  • Knowledge or understanding of various learning and behavioural needs; sincerity is key here, along with a willingness to learn, listen and replicate
  • Adaptability to different working environments and student needs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a caring and attentive demeanour
  • The ideal experience to qualify and disqualify the SEN and SEMH sector
