Our client Scottish Power Renewables are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for a long-term contract role based in Glasgow.

Main Purpose of Job

The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for the specification and technical delivery of the electrical engineering aspects of SPR’s onshore Renewables projects. Commencing at conceptual stages projects are to be technically specified and delivered through development, planning application, tendering, design, construction and commissioning phases in line with the programme. This includes Grid Application and all system design to ensure that the design complies with the project requirements. Projects will consist Wind Generation, Solar PV, Energy Storage Systems and other new technologies.

Reporting to the Lead Electrical Engineer, the Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for technically managing the day-to-day aspects of electrical engineering design and delivery of assigned projects and ensure support is given to the Project Managers and other internal stakeholders. They will lead on the technical delivery and guide and support the electrical Engineering resources assigned to them to them ensuring that technical delivery and coordination between all internal and external third parties is maintained and design carried out in line with SPR specifications, rules and company standards. You will also assist the Lead Electrical Engineer with resource management ensuring the effective deployment of electrical engineering to support delivery of the programme of projects is optimised.

The role will focus primarily on the specification and design of the HV Electrical Infrastructure on new sites and also for the re-powering of existing assets. Create electrical equipment ordering specifications from the conceptual design through to detail design and ensure placement of orders and the coordination of the technical flow of information to the requirements and timescales of the project managers. You will support the project teams with the management of the process for obtaining new grid connections, from initial application through to commissioning and testing. Additionally, the role will provide generation and review of design proposals the management and supervision of consultants and subcontractors the user requirements definition of balance of plant control systems, infrastructure and their interfaces.

The individual will be working as part of the Onshore Projects & Construction Team. The position may require periods where the individual is site based during the construction phase of projects within the UK.


Accountabilities

• Deputise for the Lead Electrical Engineer as required to support the business in their absence
• Assist the Lead Electrical Engineer with co-ordination and planning of Electrical Engineering technical resources to meet the requirements of the UK business to support Project Delivery requirements across New Business, Development, Design and Construction Delivery.
• Technically coordinate all electrical engineering project deliverables between all design third parties ensuring the project timelines are managed to the project manager’s requirements
• Build relationships with and liaise with wider Iberdrola Global Technical teams to ensure coordination and collaboration of Electrical Engineering resources and implementation of Iberdrola Global Best practice for activities delivered across the UK Engineering team
• Participate with, promote and manage positive H&S behaviours and competencies within the team to ensure high standards are achieved and maintained.
• Assist the Lead Electrical Engineer and take proactive responsibility with coaching and mentoring of the ElectricaI Engineering team and assist with technical training activities.
• Assist the project teams with the management of the process of developing, designing and constructing renewable energy assets, from initial application through to commissioning and testing.
• Lead, coordinate and manage the delivery of assigned projects and develop the set of technical schedules for inclusion within design, turbine and infrastructure contracts
• Assist in the Delivery of an agreed set of Technical Schedules for inclusion within Electrical Design, Turbine and Infrastructure Contracts
• Liaise and coordinate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure delivery specifications are met providing input on appropriate tender assessments.
• Technical input to commercial agreements and contracts to ensure project risks are mitigated.
• Ensure the identification, resolution, management of technical risks, issues and impacts to projects to mitigate hazards during their construction and operation.
• Management of the process for obtaining new grid connections, from initial application through to commissioning and testing.
• Assist in the technical assessment of electrical equipment and turbine technologies including the preparation of technical bid evaluations during tendering.
• Deliver (on/off site) expert technical services in support of renewable generation projects.
• Liaise and coordinate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure delivery specifications are met providing inputs on appropriate tender assessments
• Ensure all technical recommendations/advice is supported by due diligence
• Lead and recommend appropriate technical strategies for project delivery
• Participate in Value Engineering Workshops and support the Head of Engineering with the development of continual improvement initiatives to drive down the ‘whole lifecycle’ costs of Renewable Energy and Storage System Projects and into operation
• Continuously strive to look for innovative solutions to drive down the project Capex and Opex.
• Develop external relationships within the renewable energy sector and out-with, to ensure that SPR and Iberdrola remain abreast of engineering best practice.


Dimensions

• Provide technical support and advice to development and construction projects
• Manage and undertake general project engineering duties within Projects & Construction Engineering Team in support of the business
• Assist with recommendations, technical advice to commercial teams on the requirements for the onshore supply chain
• Assist with the delivery of Electrical Engineering, strategies, standards and specifications within SPR.
• Assist the Management and development of Electrical Engineering team


Skills, Knowledge & Experience

• Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Experience in supporting development & construction phases of power generation projects
• Experience of Renewables / Power Generation industry
• Health & Safety management skills (NEBOSH preferred)
• Analyse technical problems, providing creative solutions when required
• Good working knowledge of industry standards, design and installation codes of practice and regulations
• Excellent working knowledge of IEC and National standards, associated with Electrical Switchgear, Major Equipment and protection systems
• Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Experienced team player who consistently delivers against targets
• Pro-active, professional attitude and diligent approach. Self starter who can work with the minimal supervision
• Ability to work to tight project deadlines

Minimum Criteria

• Electrical Engineering degree qualification or equivalent
• Significant relevant experience in Grid Connection and electrical design
• IT literate with the ability to operate MS office systems and other IT based project management software.
• Need to hold a driving license and be prepared to work away from base office location as and when required.
• Chartered member of the IEE
